The Centre Manager of Tamar Sexual Assault Referral Centre, Mrs Evelyn Onah, has said that Enugu State recorded 25 rape cases from January to March in 2021.

Onah revealed this on Saturday when speaking to reporters from NAN in Enugu.

According to her, 31 cases of attempted sexual assault and five Gender-Based Violence were also recorded within the same period, with cases involving both minors and adults.

One of these decadent reports included that of an 88-year-old woman, who a 22-year-old boy in Nsukka raped.

Onah opined that the rise in reports of rape could be ascribed to idleness.

However, she also admitted that many residents engage in such criminal behaviour as a lifestyle.

Onah also said that punishment for such criminals was not meted to the full extent of the law because most families abandon cases in court due to the shame attributed to victims of such acts.
