Members of Finima community in Bonny, River State, on Thursday morning staged a protest at the main entrance of the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas plant.
The protesters, who turned out in large numbers, chanted solidarity songs while demanding that the company respects their human rights as the host community.
The situation sent panic across the community, forcing schools to close for the day over fears of violence erupting in the area.
Apart from schools, markets and other public places were also forced to shut.
The protest comes shortly before NLNG commences work on its Train seven project.
