[WATCH] Wike backs Senate’s U-turn on e-transmission of election results

By Gideon Adonai

Recall that the Senate on Tuesday got commendations for bowing to pressure and making U-turn over electronic transmission of election results.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly has empowered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the procedure for the transmission of results during the general elections.

This was just as it approved direct primaries for aspirants to all elective positions.

Mr. Lawal Pedro, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Solicitor-General of Lagos State, noted that the decision by the Senate to let the electoral umpire, INEC, determine the use of electronic voting and transfer results is a good development.

He added that it is an evidence that Nigeria is in tune with developments around the world.

“With this development, election results can now be transmitted from polling booths and this will help in eradicating any form of malpractices. It is a welcome development and I pray that the politicians will not frustrate it”, Pedro said.

He, however, added that INEC must be careful while working with this new development because of those who will want to do any form of manipulation with technology, stating that technology can also be used for mischievous acts.

“We had seen cases of election results being announced while the real results have not even been declared; the development is a good one but we need to be careful so as not to cause chaos in the society through those who may want to use the social media to manipulate the results that are yet to be announced by INEC.

“Everything that has advantages also has disadvantages and we have to guide against the disadvantages that comes with it”, he noted.

Hannibal Uwaifo, President, African Bar Association (AFBA), said so many things are being transmitted electronically and that the Senate decision is one of the best things that has happened to Nigeria. Transmitting election results electronically will now deal with the challenges of tampering with results, he said.

“Although there will still be some little challenges on the process but the development is a welcome development”.
