COVID-19: Premier League clubs set to discuss postponing Christmas fixtures

Premier League clubs will reportedly meet on Monday to discuss postponing an entire round of fixtures amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Six matches were cancelled this weekend after several clubs registered internal breakouts of COVID-19 cases, leaving them unable to fulfil squad requirements.

According to The Athletic, Gameweek 20 – the fixtures on December 28, December 29 and December 30 – is the round of matches most likely to be postponed.

It’s understood that managers and players alike are concerned about what impact the Omicron variant could have on their demanding Christmas schedules.

However, while the Premier League recognises a number of clubs are facing breakouts, their intention is to continue its current fixture schedule where ‘safely possible’.
