Nigerians on Twitter have slammed Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the post he made on Thursday concerning a visit to his hometown, Jada, Adamawa State.

Atiku had tweeted that he was “being pampered” at a dinner in his hometown, and quipped, “Pray I don’t end up adding extra weight on my return 😃”, which drew the ire of many Nigerians on the microblogging platform.

“ASUU and NEPA are still on strike and you’re here talking about adding extra weight and using meme. Rest please. We are tired,” one @rutie_xx said.

Another user, @Teddyblack1234, said the former VP should keep his “dry jokes” to himself.

“You think Nigeria is a joke? Keep your dry jokes to yourself…I’m sure this will be your last Election so you can move back to Dubai your base (sic)”, he said.

Other users made light of the presidential candidate’s post, drawing on an existing trope that the statesman spends most of his time in Dubai instead of Nigeria, a claim Atiku has denounced as a “fixation of the media”.

Another user, @OOlusore, asked the presidential candidate to appear on live television to explain how he plans on tackling insecurity, poverty and unemployment, instead of sharing photos.

“With due respect sir, We are not interested in these photos you are uploading. Come LIVE on National TV to tell Nigerians how you intend to tackle INSECURITY, POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT amongst others. WE DON’T WANT RECORDED VIDEOS. Thank you, sir. Signed, Concerned Nigerians (sic)” the user tweeted.

Atiku, the presidential candidate for Nigeria’s opposition candidate, is a frontrunner for the seat of power ahead of Nigeria’s 2023 Presidential elections.
