The Human Rights, Liberty, Access, and Peace Defenders’Foundation, and the Campaign for Democracy, South East Zone have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to fire Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele as soon as possible.

The groups’ leader, Dede Uzor A Uzor made the call in a statement he issued from their base in Enugu, Enugu State.

Dede Uzor while calling for Emefiele’s sack argued that it has become apparent that the CBN Governor has exhausted his ideas on how to improve the economy of Nigeria.

He said, “Presently, N1 naira to a USA dollar is now at N845.00. If economic measures were not put in place, it will astronomically raised to over N1000 to $1 before the end of the year 2022

“Emefiele has bastardised the Nigerian economy through his ‘cut and join’ policies. Inflation in the country has risen to an all-time high in the country from 8.7 per cent to 21.8 per cent.”

According to the CSOs, Emefiele became distracted from his primary responsibility of managing Nigeria’s monetary policy when he decided to enter politics.

They also queried Emefiele’s decision to redesign the naira, asking “what is the economic gain and implications of redesigning the naira? It is not important to our economy.”
