Three was a mild drama on Friday during the literature in English paper of the West African Examination Council, WAEC as an invigilator rejects bribes and incentives from a head of school which was offered so he would let them carry out their corrupt examination malpractices.
AF24NEWS reports that the paper began from 3:00pm and 5:30pm and the Lagos private school [ name withheld] was prepared to supply answers to candidates in the hall.
According to a student who spoke exclusively to our correspondent, the external invigilator was appeased with all kinds of food, but he rejected all.
Recall that this online newspaper had previously reported on two different occasions how WAEC papers leaked an hour to the exam.
The invigilator was presented fresh hot roasted corn and a bottle of chilled Coca-Cola in order to allow pieces of papers in which prepared answers were already written in them, but the invigilator turned them down.
Asked whether the student [name withheld] who narrated this was able to write and others, he said he was able to write well as it was all the he revised for that came out in the exam and there was no need for cheating in the exam.
According to another source who is one of the teachers in the school, the examiner was promised a bribe of ₦20,000, but still rejected it. It was increased to ₦35,000 but a “no” was still the answer.
Meanwhile at another private school in Ago, Okota area of Lagos, an invigilator asked all students to pay ₦1,000.00 for them to be allowed to cheat in the hall.
When AF24NEWS asked how many students offered the literature exam, it was said that the candidates were about 70.
The candidate said she refused to pay because she her parents didn’t give her that kind of money and that it was even what she read that came out in the exam, so she didn’t panic at all.
Interestingly, the council appears to be fighting tooth and nail to curb examination malpractices, especially in Nigeria.
In a recent communique, the council tweeted on its page to the general public, asking them to report cases if irregularities or examination malpractices, after providing a phone number .
Report examination malpractice cases and irregularities in the ongoing WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023, to us on WhatsApp via 07047674637. Note that this number is strictly for reporting only examination irregularities, and cases will be treated with confidentiality.
